The alphabet from space – in pictures

Nasa’s Earth Observatory has tracked down images resembling all 26 letters of the English alphabet using satellite imagery and astronaut photograph.

Letter A: Utah’s Green river doubling back on itself, a feature known as Bowknot Bend
Letter B: Arkansas river and the Holla Bend Wildlife Refuge
Letter C: artificial islands at the southern end of Bahrain island
Letter D: Akimiski island in James Bay, Canada
Letter E: phytoplankton bloom off the New Zealand coast
Letter F: valleys and snow-covered mountain ranges in south-east Tibet
Letter G: this image of Pinaki island, French Polynesia, was captured by astronauts on the International Space Station in April 2001
Letter H: rivers running through colourful ridges in south-west Kyrgyzstan
Letter I: Andaman islands. The thin, bright rings surrounding several of the islands are coral reefs that were lifted by an earthquake near Sumatra in 2004
Letter J: Trunk Reef near Townsville, Australia
Letter K: glaciers at the Sirmilik national park in Mittimatalik, Canada
Letter L: snow across the north-east US
Letter M: glaciers in the Tian Shan mountains, north-east Kyrgyzstan
Letter N: ship tracks over the Pacific. Ship emissions contain small particles that cause the clouds to form
Letter O: Tenoumer meteorite crater in Mauritania. The meteorite struck Earth between 10,000 and 30,000 years ago
Letter P: Mackenzie river delta, Canada
Letter Q: Lonar crater, India
Letter R: Lago Menéndez, Argentina
Letter S: clouds swirling over the Atlantic
Letter T: a development along two roads, United Arab Emirates
Letter U: Gooseneck state park, Utah
Letter V: ash on the snow around Shiveluch volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula
Letter W: dust blowing over the Red Sea
Letter X: north-west corner of Leidy glacier, Greenland
Letter Y: Ugab river, Namibia
Letter Z: wildfire smoke over Canada
